BUSINESS PROFILE

Triple-X Aquatic Clothing Co was established by surfer and entrepreneur businessman Don Munro during the year of 1993. His vision was to create a hardcore family business, that would hopefully some day allow for his children and/or his grandchildren to enjoy the freedom and vocational choice of a career suited to their own lifestyle.

For the first 5 years the business concentrated on manufacturing and marketing sun protective aquatic clothing (Lycra*) for the beach and greater outdoors. Sunshirts or rashies as they are more commonly known soon became their number one seller.

Apart from marketing the Triple-X brand of products, a corporate branding service was introduced to supply the specialised logo requirements of surf and specialty retailers, board riding clubs, as well as advertising and merchandising agencies. Some of the Australian companies to have used the corporate service are Surfection, Saltwater Wine, Kelloggs, Coca-Cola, along with overseas clients in the US, Tahiti, Hawaii and Reunion Island. In the late nineties the business began researching and developing a range of Titanium Wetsuits, driven by Don’s obsession for R&D and new technology. Wetsuits are now their core business and Don is still dedicated to designing, developing and manufacturing the best and most functional price pointed wetsuits available, using the very latest in neoprene technology.

This core business has grown and has been nurtured from a specific philosophy that is best summed up by the fact that Triple-X wetsuits and aquatic clothing have never been about what’s fashionable or what’s selling at the time. The major drive and business success has come from the dedicated pursuit of necessity and function, based on the simple idea that you should only use what’s needed.

Rather than add an array of bells and whistles or gimmicks that may or may not provide some minor function, but certainly whatever the case is, adds to the price and ultimately to the cost to the wetsuit buying punter. Put simply, keep it simple.

The targeted market has always been the dedicated hardcore surfer, diver and watersports person. These are the people Triple-X knows best, because Triple-X are these people. With this in mind the goal has always been simple; provide a genuine product with comfort, quality and durability at the best possible price, backed with service.


The Triple-X business and family philosophy was born from and has ultimately been the need to maintain the status-quo of the “watersports lifestyle”.  Don has surfed and dived since the late fifties, he has worked in the surfing industry some 40 years now. Beginning with shaping surfboards in the early years to designing surfwear from the mid-late sixties into the early eighties to manufacturing wetsuits in the late nineties and now well into the twenty first century. Don and his eldest son Shaun (a retired top 44 pro surfer) run the business along with the assistance of other family members and staff who add their valued input & support.. Triple-X Products are now shipped all over the world with their wholesale and retail business growing and expanding nationally and internationally. 

Up until recently Shaun was only involved on a casual consulting basis with the company, assisting in putting together the retail solutions and product development for the Triple-X Showroom, which is now heading into its second year of trading.

Gradually over the past six months Shaun has become more and more involved to the point he has now taken on a full time role in Sales and Marketing.

Shaun’s background:

After competing successfully as a professional surfer on the ASP World Tour for over eight years, he moved sidewise from the surfing world, spending several years [1997-2003] working in the organic produce industry. It was here he was forced to develop a strong work ethic in a no nonsense environment, that also demanded some passion for the organic movement, as it was in these times that the industry was still wrestling with much scepticism.

This proved to be a great education in sales, in particular, when you strongly believe in the quality of your product and sticking to your guns when the mainstream is still marching to the same old tune.

Eventually some nostalgic leanings, that can generally creep up on a bloke with some years under the belt, drove Shaun back into the surfing/dive industry. Firstly a stint resurrecting, “Sydney Surf Co” within the legendary Gowings establishment on Market Street in the heart of the Sydney CBD, bringing the hardcore surf shop back into the Metropolis. With some success in this environment he then moved over to the Surfection group to manage a Quiksilver franchise store. Quiksilver International eventually reacquired this store, but Shaun opted to keep it simple, stepped back and spent a year working casually and odd night shifts so he could spend time with his one year old son Louis.

With Louis now nearly 4 years old, Shaun is back into the thick of things and taking on the new and challenging role of sales and marketing manager for Triple-X Wetsuits. In other words his old man, in typical style, did a top sales job on him and lured him into the family business.

Shaun is very optimistic about the future of such a grassroots surfing/dive, family business and can clearly see the parallels with his time in the early years of the organic industry. With a wealth of retail, wholesale and general customer focused experience under his belt, Shaun knows the landscape well and is keen to push the business further upward and onward.

Don and Shaun believe the timing is right for smaller surfing/dive businesses offering quality products and personal service and operating with a heart and soul philosophy that cannot be manufactured by analysts in suits who dwell outside the core loop.
